Dr. Birke is the Director of Rehabilitation Services at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Diabetes Foot Program, Baton Rouge, LA. He received his Physical Therapy education at Columbia University, a Master’s Degree from the University of Kentucky and a PhD from Louisiana State University. For the past 30 years he has specialized in the treatment of neuropathic foot problems. He is a retired captain in the United States Public Health Service last serving as the Director of the Foot Program at the National Hansen’s Disease Center, Carville, LA. He has made numerous publications and presentations on management of the neuropathic foot. In 2009, the American Diabetes Association honored him with the Roger Pecoraro Award for outstanding contributions to the knowledge and treatment of the diabetic foot.
