John Van Rys

John Van Rys is a graduate of Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and since 2005 has been a Professor of English at Redeemer University College (Ancaster, Ontario), where he teaches expository writing and Canadian Literature, and where he is also chair of the Academic Standards Committee. Prior to his work at Redeemer UC, John taught for fifteen years at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. His teaching there included Freshman Composition and Business and Technical Writing. John does scholarly work on Canadian Literature, writing on a range of modern Canadian writers, including Alice Munro and Carol Shields, with particular interests in cross-border writing and historical fiction. In addition, John is the lead author of The Research Writer: Curiosity, Discovery, Dialogue, and he has co-authored several other writing texts for college and for the workplace, including The College Writer (in its fourth edition), The Business Writer, COMP, and Write for Business.
