Words are often thought of as only orthographic entities; entries into the elements of spelling, syntax, and grammatical standards - static, stale, and stoic. However, words are not just part of an orthographic system; they are metaphorical representations of the visual and kinesthetic world we live in and love. Our students need our help developing and connecting the processes, skills, and meaning making involved in critical reading and thinking to all essential visual literacies that bombard them on a daily basis, whether on pages, billboards, or screens. Come and discuss how to infuse electricity into education, lightning into literacy, metacognition into the classroom.
