Yogi Berra once leaked this bit of intelligence: “In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.” If there is one secret to academic success, it’s practice. Students sometimes think that the secret to college success belongs only to instructors - an encrypted, “eyes only” code that students must “crack.” In truth, First-Year Seminar instructors are intentional couriers of the simple but elusive principles of college success. But there is one secret that sometimes eludes students: Success requires them to integrate the theory they read on the textbook
page into their own academic practice. Simply put: college success is about learning how to learn and putting that into practice.
