Using creative nonfiction in the composition classroom is one of the most efficient ways to change how students think about writing as a discipline. In this talk, I will take a global approach to illustrate how creative nonfiction can allow students to “join the conversation”— or re-conceptualize what it means to be a part of academic discourse communities—by showing them that what they experience in the world holds the potential for meaning, and that critical thinking and analysis have real world applications. By grounding composition skills in more relatable material, we not only make the learning process more effective, but also introduce students to the very real pleasures and rewards of sustained, thoughtful inquiry.
