We describe results on the nature, number, and location of defects for minimizers of the Landau-De Gennes Q-tensor energy in thin liquid crystal materials. We also describe properties of minimizers for a Q-tensor energy constrained by the Maier-Saupe potential, and discuss differences observed in these models.
