Over the past few years, my group (with various collaborators) have shown how density functional approximations can be derived systematically, in terms of a very special type of semiclassical expansion, as first pointed out by Lieb and Simon 41 years ago. I will explain how this expansion works, show how many of the most useful approximations can be understood (and even derived), and report on recent progress.
