Joan McCool, PhD

Dr. Joan McCool serves as Director, SUNY Buffalo State Counseling Center and as Principal Investigator for a three-year SAMHSA grant entitled “Buffalo State Cares: A Call to Bystanders to Prevent Suicide on Campus.” Dr. McCool is a licensed psychologist and has more than thirty years of experience counseling college students. As chief psychologist and administrator of the Counseling Center (accredited through the International Association of Counseling Services), Dr. McCool has made it her mission and the mission of the Counseling Center to respond to the needs of students through crisis intervention, treatment, education, outreach, research and advocacy. She has heightened mental health, safety, and violence awareness by encouraging early campus-wide leadership, crisis management, and mandatory assessment for students with suicidal behaviors. She has been an “expert” contributor on numerous mental health and wellness issues (e.g., mental health, coping skills, relationships, lifestyles, marriage, divorce, families, time management, women, trauma and stress) to both the local media and national outlets.     [ Click for More ]
