My 30+ years of teaching, research, and service with the disability and rehabilitation communities have given me great opportunities to witness and be part of positive changes in our field, such as the shift from a professionally-dominated helping model to a collaborative partnership of working with clients toward quality of life and social justice through enhanced self-efficacy, access, accommodation, and equal opportunity. The session I am moderating describes, discusses and celebrates this client-professional relational shift. We will use film clips and oral history accounts to inform our discussion of consciousness-raising and self-advocacy for disability rights and self-determination of marginalized persons. I am the current President of the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association and Associate Editor of the peer-reviewed journal, Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin.
