Charles A. Cefalu, MD, MS Dr. Cefalu is Program Director of the Louisiana State University Geriatric Medicine Fellowship; Chief of the Section of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center; and Co-Director of its Center on Aging. He supervises LSU medical students and internal medicine and family medicine residents in the nursing home setting. Dr. Cefalu serves as Chair of the Clinical Practice Committee and is a member of the Clinical Practice Guideline Committee of the American Medical Directors Association and the Public Policy Committee of the American Geriatrics Society. He was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society and the board of the Association of Directors of Academic Geriatric Programs. He also serves on the nursing home initiative of the Louisiana Healthcare Review, the organization that oversees quality improvement by Medicare for nursing homes in the state. He is Medical Director of three LSU-affiliated nursing homes in the New Orleans Metro area.

A graduate of LSU School of Medicine – New Orleans, Dr. Cefalu completed his residency in Family Medicine at Earl K. Long Hospital in Baton Rouge. He served as Director of an LSU Family Practice Residency in Baton Rouge, Medical Director of an LSU teaching hospital in Independence, LA, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine. He then practiced rural family medicine and geriatrics in Kentwood, LA and finished a geriatric medicine fellowship and Masters of Science at Bowman Gray School of Medicine/Wake Forest University. Before coming to LSU, Dr. Cefalu served as Chief of Geriatrics for the Department of Family Medicine at Georgetown University (1992-1997), where he planned, developed, and coordinated a geriatric medicine fellowship at the Georgetown-affiliated teaching hospital. He was one of 10 family physicians chosen nationally to serve as a Residency Assistance Program/Hartford Geriatric Initiative Consultant for the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Dr. Cefalu was elected in 1999 to serve a 3-year term as Co-Chair of the Council of State Affiliate Representatives (COSAR) and the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society. He founded the Louisiana Geriatric Society in 1999 and has served as its President since December 2004. He also currently serves as the society’s Executive Director. From July 1997 to 2002, Dr. Cefalu served as Professor and Associate Chairman for Geriatric Program Development in the Department of Family Medicine at the LSU School of Medicine –New Orleans. Effective July 1, 2002, Dr. Cefalu was appointed Professor and the first Chief of the department’s new Section of Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Cefalu is the author of regional, national, and international publications on Geriatric Medicine and has spoken at local, regional, and national geriatric conferences. He was the Principal Investigator of a Phase III Clinical Trial of a medication to treat osteoporosis; LSU was one of 100 sites to take part in this international trial. He also recently served as principal investigator of an observational study of chronic anemia in long-term care residents and is currently involved in research regarding Fall Risk Assessment and Osteoporosis in the nursing home.
