Sheryl Zimmerman, PhD, is a Kenan Flagler Bingham Distinguished Professor and co-director of the Program on Aging, Disability, and Long-Term Care of the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A social gerontologist, research methodologist, and long-term care researcher, Dr. Zimmerman has led over 60 studies in long-term care settings, including numerous descriptive and intervention studies in U.S. nursing homes and assisted living settings, and several cross-national studies of long-term care services. Drs. Sloane and Zimmerman are currently co-directing a program of research in which an interdisciplinary team (from dentistry, dental hygiene, nursing, medicine, psychology, health education, and health services research) has conducted a literature review; designed, implemented, and evaluated a trial of an evidence-based intervention designed to improve mouth care of nursing home residents whose care is challenging; and is developing training materials based on these studies.
