Dr. Penny Akers has led the Internal Medicine Clinic at Carilion Clinic since 2005. She has also managed the Internal Medicine Residency Clinic, which serves primarily indigent patients, since 2005, and the Carilion Family Medicine Residency Practice for six years previously.  Dr. Akers is a leader of clinical practice policy issues, including efficiencies, at Carilion, where she serves on Magnet Recertification Committee, Ambulatory Shared Governance Committee and Policy and Procedure Committees.  Dr. Akers is also adjunct faculty in Nursing Leadership at Jefferson College of Health Sciences. In 2011, Dr. Akers and her team of attending physicians, residents, office staff and nurses received the Carilion Clinic Pioneer Quality Award for a hypertension compliance project at the Internal Medicine Residency Clinic.
