Barbara is Vice President for Nursing & Quality and Chief Nurse for Group Healh Cooperative headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Group Health, one of the largest consumer governed organizations, is an integrated delivery and finance system serving over 650,000 consumers in the state of Washington and Northern Idaho. Dr. Trehearne is responsible for professional nursing practice for 1500 nursing staff. She is also responsible for Quality which includes the clinical improvement and prevention programs for Group Health. Her work includes clinical leadership development of staff and managers in addition to coordinating and teaching the RN to BS off campus program with Seattle Pacific University. Dr. Trehearne is an Associate Dean for Clinical Practice at the University of Washington School of Nursing.
An active participant in local, regional, and national nursing organizations, Dr. Trehearne has long advocated for the continued development of nursing leaders and the role of nurses in the development and design of health care services.

She has led the development of nursing role sin the chronic disease management in Group Health. She teaches extensively in the area of leadership, clinical delegation, scope of practice and professional nursing practice. Her doctoral dissertation examined the role of nurse executive and perceptions of senior leaders and frontline nurse managers.
She is a fellow in the Western Academy of Nurses and the Center for Nursing Leadership.
Dr. Trehearne is the current chair of the Board of Directors of the Washington Center for Nursing whose mission is to ensure an adequate nursing workforce for the citizens of Washington.
In 2009 she was awarded the Distinguished Career award by the Northwest Organization of Nurse Executives. In 2007, she received the Mountain West Region Nurse Week Nursing Excellence Award for Advancing and Leading the Profession.
